However, it’s through her work running 100% Silk, a new sub-label of Not Not Fun formed last year, that Brown began to infiltrate the world of dance music – and do so in a big way.”

“FACT mix 308 is by Benjamin John Power aka Blanck Mass.
Power is probably best known as one half of Fuck Buttons, but it’s with his Blanck Mass solo project that he’s most enchanted us. BM’s self-titled album, released on Mogwai’s Rock Action label, is an electronic odyssey partly inspired by the spiritually attuned cosmology of Carl Sagan. It’s tempting to describe the record as ambient, but that doesn’t really do justice to its impact or scale: Power paints on a huge canvas, and his towering, high-fidelity soundscapes might be sensuous, and beatless, but they’re designed to blow your mind rather than soothe it: Blanck Mass is musical science fiction at its purest, thrillingly evocative of planets turning, galaxies forming, suns burning and black holes consuming. Sagan would’ve loved it.”

“Ayshay is the recording alias of Fatima Al Qadiri. Based in New York, but born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait (according to a recent Fader interview, she then lived in eight cities before settling in Brooklyn), her debut EP Warn-U, released on Tri Angle this Autumn, is one of 2011’s most unique and unsettling records.
Inspired by Sunni and Shiite Muslim worship songs, Warn-U is built 100% from Al Qadiri’s own voice, re-pitched and manipulated to mimic everything from century-old ghosts to Autotune chart pop. For those who’ve followed her Global.wav column (and, sometimes, accompanying mixtapes – check the Muslim Trance one once you’ve listened to her FACT mix) for DIS magazine, it’ll make a little more sense: mainstream Western pop and Muslim religion and culture are two key constants in Al Qadiri’s frame of reference, and the music she records as Ayshay (Arabic for “whatever”) absorbs and rethinks both. It’s also worth checking the excellent EP she recently released under her own name, Genre-Specific Xperience.
FACT mix 307 is subtitled Ayshay’s ‘Surrender’ mix, and is dedicated to the Fade to Mind crew (Kingdom, Mike Q, etc), Dave Quam, Azizaman and DJ Rashad and Spinn’s Ghettoteknitianz clique. That, combined with the rest of this introduction, might make you think you know what you’re getting into – traditional Muslim song, ballroom house and footwork. Trust us, that’s not even half of it.”

“The South London resident has been recording music since the mid-‘90s, under various guises, but it’s in the last two years that he’s really come into his own, releasing some of the most distinctive UK house music around; warm and rough (by West Norwood’s own admission, barely any of the equipment in his studio works properly at this point), and constantly looking to the skip of mid-’90s garage and the bounce of classic hip-hop for inspiration.
His FACT mix is in a similar vein to West Norwood’s productions: groove is everything here, with not one track slowing down the overall flow, and it’s recorded off vinyl and acetate (yes, he still cuts dubplates) with a healthy touch of looseness to it. Unreleased material from West Norwood’s own label features, as well as forthcoming cuts by Blawan, Midland, Pariah, Brackles and more.”

“The Dutch producer/DJ, real name Pieter Willems, caught our attention thanks to his debut EP, Love Again, released eariler this year on Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen label.
When first introducing him to us, Daneeka described Presk’s sound as “a cross between whatyacallit and techno”; a tongue-in-cheek simplification perhaps, but one which does nail the essence of what makes his tunes stand out. The swing and accenting on his beats betrays the influence of UK garage and funky, but he’s also unafraid to lock things down into a taut, tracky 4/4 throb. Combined with his flair for moody synth hooks and bruising b-lines, it’s magic: just listen to the drop on ‘Devour’ and try not to bite your lip in approbation.”

“Like Objekt, who contributed a heavyweight techno session for FACT’s 300th mix this Monday gone, Kahn is a relative newcomer, but hasn’t taken long to impress us: his first drop for Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label, ‘Like We Used To’ was a diamond set slightly off-centre between r’n’b and garage (and nothing “future” about it), while ‘Illy’ / ‘Tehran’, last month’s follow up, was looming half-step that showcased Kahn’s darker side. He also contributed an impressive digital EP, Altar, to A Future Without, and indulged his dubbier tendencies on a 10″ titled ‘Way Mi Defend’.
Kahn is from Bristol, and it shows on his FACT mix: as well as tracks from Peverelist, Pinch, new Punch Drunk signings Zho and Kahn himself, there’s material from Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack and Martina Topley-Bird. It’s also almost definitely the first time A Perfect Circle have featured in a FACT mix. You can download it below.”

“FACTs 300th mix comes from almost certainly our dance music newcomer of 2011, Berlin’s Objekt.
Objekt hasn’t released much in 2011, but that’s one of the reasons his emergence has been so welcome. In an age of oversaturation and overexposure, where people feel the need to upload their entire life stories to Soundcloud after two weeks of watching Logic tutorials, he’s the definition of someone who’s taken time to hone a craft (he’s actually worked as a programmer at Native Instruments for several years, which goes some way to explaining why his music is so sonically potent), and waited until they’re 100% ready before exposing their wares to the world at large.”

“FACT mix 299 is by the wonderful Xeno & Oaklander.
The New York duo, real names Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride, has just released a new album, Sets & Lights, on Wierd Records – the label that pretty much instigated the “cold wave” and minimal synth revival. X&O have been it longer than most, debuting with the self-released Vigils CD-R (subsequently reissued on vinyl by Wierd) back in 2006. Their sophomore LP, Sentinelle (2009), is one of the most poised and punchy examples to date of the new American synth-pop.”
